Organic molecules as semiconductors

The research in the semiconductor area has been providing more options as multiple materials have that property of partially conducting electricity or they could with some modification process. Graphene was making noise since its birth not so long ago and it seems very interesting for researchers, but of course there are other alternatives to be tested or discovered.

Is not a secret that Graphene outperforms silicon —the most widely used semiconductor nowadays— in many areas, and for sure it will bring more surprises in the future.

Different organic molecules express semiconduction like polymers or oligomers. As note, the brain cells have a method to control the electric impulses traveling around, and it would be strange that Nature doesn’t use semiconduction to achieve additional methods of control in multiple organisms.

It's believed lately that semiconductive polymers like aromatic hydrocarbons are the precursor for a vast quantity of carbon in the entire Universe.

If you hear something about organic photovoltaics, probably the source comes from these molecules. The efficiency for solar panels is far from 100%; who knows if finally an affordable cell achieves at least 50% efficiency thanks to this technology.

And what about OLED displays? The “O” stand for organic, light emitting diodes using rubrene, another aromatic hydrocarbon.

Organic FET (Field Effect Transistors) use also rubrene, but they aren't available to be purchased easily!
